Big Data and its challenges

 I hope everyone enjoyed last weeks edition of the blog and is looking forward to this week’s blog. This week we are going to have a look at big data and all it entails. I’m going to focus in mainly on the ethical and social challenges associated with it.

 So, what is big data ??

Big data, this term defines quantities, characters or symbols that are operated on by a computer its data that contains greater variety, arriving in increasing volumes and with more velocity. Its large and hard to manage volumes of data.

So, there are some social and ethical challenges that could be on the horizon for big data. Let’s get into it!

 

Ethical & Social challenges

One of the main issues I saw for big data would be the management of the massive amounts of data. Lots of companies are collecting more and more data everyday and lots of the storage centres can be very insufficient. This is making companies nervous, and they also have a fear of all this new data having a sufficient impact.

 

One of the next issues would be integrating data from multiple sources. As there is so much variety in the data that is collected in organisations. A company could have data moving from multiple different systems and sources. Lots of this data is not structured in the same way but may have to be compiled together to get the correct and accurate reports and files needed.

 

Selecting the perfect big data tool can be a tricky one for businesses even though there is so many different tools to choose from there is so much variety there it can be hard to choose the right fit for your company. For a company to not have the correct tools they cannot align their strategies to it and have their files match. Variety can cause problems sometimes…...

 

A major problem that was very evident was the lack of professional and skilled data professionals. Lots of employees have never had the encounter or experience with big data before and people with no training or correct qualifications can make using big data very hard. It can cause lots of unfinished work and errors.

 

Data security is a massive issue, and many companies are able to keep and handle all of this sensitive data. The importance of keeping sensitive data private is crucial for companies if sensitive data got out it could cause customers to have major distrust in companies and could have major implications for their customers. Companies are at great risk of being hacked if this sensitive data isn’t correctly stored.

What can be seen from this is the sheer level of challenges that come with big data not only is quite large and complicated to understand but there is also a lengthily list of how hard it is to manage and you have to get it just right.
